When veteran gallerist James Fuentes relocated from the Lower East Side to a more than 3,000-square-foot ground floor space in Tribeca, he wanted a gallery space that felt like it had always been there. We maintained the existing floors and tin ceilings of the traditional 19th century cast-iron building and didn’t interfere with the unusual column-free and wider-than-usual interior expanse. To avoid competing with the art, we kept the backgrounds monochromatic and subdued. High-quality state of the art gallery lighting was employed throughout, but in the back gallery, we took advantage of natural light, diffusing it via a frosted skylight. Simple Formica desks that match the floor and reference the 1990s finished the space.
