For this penthouse in a 1930s Art Deco building by Emery Roth, we plumbed the tension between prewar Manhattan residential finery and a contemporary sensibility that puts a premium on reduction and strategic juxtaposition. A full gut renovation resulted in a re-envisioned space with a mix of finishes and architectural and decorative details that find unexpected harmony in a confluence of opposites: tough and soft, industrial and refined, modern and old fashioned. The work on the apartment included the terrace surrounding the apartment as an extension of the interior space.
